"How much does an app cost?" is like asking how much a house costs. The answer depends on what you need inside it. Here are the factors that really decide the scope, timeline and budget of a business mobile app, and how to keep them under control.

1. Features

Every screen and feature adds design, development and testing time. Typical building blocks:

  • Sign-in, profiles and user roles
  • Product or service catalogue
  • Orders, bookings or forms
  • Payments
  • Push notifications
  • Chat or WhatsApp integration
  • Reports and dashboards

Tip: list features as must have, should have and nice to have. Launch with the must-haves.

2. Platforms

Android only, iOS only, or both? A cross-platform approach such as React Native or Flutter builds both from one codebase, which is usually the most economical way to cover both stores. (See our comparison of React Native, Flutter and native.)

3. The back end

Most apps need a server: a database, an admin panel and APIs. If you already have a web application or billing software, the app can often connect to it instead of building everything new.

4. Integrations

Payment gateways, SMS, maps, the WhatsApp Business API, ERP or accounting software. Each integration adds effort, but also adds a lot of value.

5. Design

A clean design built from standard components is faster than a fully custom, animated interface. Both are possible; choose based on your audience.

6. Testing and publishing

Apps must be tested on many phones and screen sizes, then approved by Google Play and the Apple App Store. Allow time for store review.

7. Maintenance

Android and iOS update every year, and your business will want new features. Budget for ongoing maintenance and hosting from the start.

A typical timeline

  • Discovery and planning: 1 to 2 weeks
  • Design: 1 to 3 weeks
  • Development: 4 to 12 weeks, depending on scope
  • Testing and store publishing: 1 to 2 weeks

Simple apps can launch in about six weeks; larger platforms are delivered in phases.

Start with an MVP

A minimum viable product (MVP) includes only the core features needed to be useful. You launch sooner, get real feedback and spend the rest of the budget on what users actually ask for.
